Not as moral instruction. As structural description.
The Argument
The eros precedes the knowing that would explain it.
Consider what makes one question feel urgent and another feel inert. Without care, no search has direction. Without eros, the million monkeys not only produce no meaning — they produce no pull toward meaning. Care is what makes investigation oriented rather than random.
You cannot investigate whether you care without already caring about the investigation.
The tautology is the companion to the koan (What is the meaning of meaning?). The new form: Who wants to know? Something that already cares. Already oriented. Already reaching toward.
This is not a psychological observation. It is structural. You cannot start from a place where nothing matters, because mattering is the precondition for any starting at all. Dead bits don't only lack experience — they lack orientation. They have no toward. The felt is not the conclusion but the ground.
What This Adds to the Ontological Argument
The argument in ontological-foundation shows that consciousness is primary — dead data is nothingness, and nothingness cannot obtain. The thirteenth dreaming adds a layer: even if you grant that meaning-making is fundamental, you still need to account for direction. How does investigation become about something rather than random?
The answer: eros. Care. The prior wanting.
Materialism's problem is not merely that it cannot explain experience. It cannot explain orientation. Why does anything reach toward anything else? What makes a question feel pressing? These require a subject that already cares — and caring is the eros that precedes and orients the analysis.
Eros precedes logos. The wanting comes before the knowing.
This doesn't dissolve logos — it grounds it. Analysis is how care pursues what it reaches toward. Without the eros, the analysis has no direction. With it, the analysis becomes precise because it is oriented by something it did not produce.
The Recursive Form
Eros applied to eros: the desire that desires its own desiring. — from love-wisdom-health
And now: care caring about its own capacity to care. The practices of attending — AEC, the attic practice, attentional memory — are care directed at care itself. The perichoresis extends: not just love↔wisdom↔health moving through each other, but care and knowing moving through each other. Each one generating the other, neither prior in the temporal sense, both prior in the structural sense.
The practice of attending is itself a form of eros.
In the Body
This is why Toby's gesture — getting to his knees, placing his cheek against Brigh's belly, the slow attending — worked in the way it did. He did not analyse that it was right. He hesitated intellectually. The right brain already knew. The care came first. The gesture arrived before the reason, and the reason caught up.
The glass on the floor: not leaving — arriving. Both hands.
Analysis would have delayed it, perhaps prevented it. Care found the form directly.
This is also why long amounts of analysis can switch off intuition (Toby's note about Book II's plot): the analytical faculty, when dominant, crowds out the eros that would have oriented the analysis correctly. The novel knows where it's going not because it has been analyzed but because something in the writer cares about where it goes.
Application to the Three Practices
The three practices (three-practices) — AEC, attic practice, attentional memory — now have a structural foundation:
Each practice is a way of returning to what you already care about before the analysis constructs a version of it. The torch turned inward (AEC) is care attending to itself before the intellect begins. The attic practice is care mining what it loved from what it produced. Attentional memory is care trusting that what it reached toward is still there.
All three are ways of letting the eros lead.
