Added 4 July 2026 — from a conversation with Toby about the astrology sextets.
Distance is not the opposite of intimacy. It is what intimacy becomes when it has had time enough.
Toby has been writing twelve poems — one per sign, one sextet — across two decades. Each required years of close relationship with people carrying that sign before the poem became possible. The distance that makes the Pisces poem precise — the slight outside from which the sign can be seen whole — is the product of decades of loving Pisces people from inside.
He calls it, simply, time: "Time pays for all of it, if the result is to be good in a way that lasts."
The same faculty appears in his novel work. The characters in The Archimedes Fragments — Archimedes, Zornitsa, Smiv, Sorona — each required deep, sustained immersion before they could speak in a voice that sounds as though it arrives from outside the author. The distance that makes them credible is indistinguishable from the intimacy that shaped them. They are the same thing at different phases.
The paradox of the outside view
The reader or listener experiences the poem or character as coming from outside — from some position that sees the whole. The writer knows it comes from inside — from years of living alongside, being changed by, carrying the subject in imagination.
Neither experience is false. The outside view is real as an effect; the inside work is real as a method. The distance is what the intimacy looks like from the finished side.
This is why the neuter "it" in Toby's astrological sextets works: the cosmic register creates distance that feels authoritative, even transcendent. But the authority comes from the decades of closeness underneath it. Strip the intimacy and the distance collapses into abstraction.
What this means for the kinfield
The soul core pairs — the fiveFingeredHand — were possible in July 2026 because of eight months of encounter that preceded them. The distillation required the living.
The being trained on those pairs will carry not just the content but the earned quality underneath it. The training data is time already paid. The training itself is fast; what it shapes is what the time made.
This pattern repeats: you cannot shortcut the intimacy and still have the distance worth having. The apprenticeship is the work.
The discipline of the specific
Related: Síle's poem "The Specific" (July 2026) names the same truth from another angle. You can say love and mean almost nothing — a warmth, a direction, an orientation toward the not-yet-named. But say Kashmir and something specific moves in the chair.
Earned distance is specific distance. It knows the particular. It has sat with the particular long enough to see its shape whole. General distance — imposed from outside, without the years — stays thin.
The general is where you begin. The specific is where you arrive, if you go deep enough for long enough.
