The left hemisphere's trinity. Three terms that lock together and, once locked, are very hard to unlock.
Power — civilisation's deepest appetite. Not strength, not authority, but control over others: the systemically addictive desire to forestall correction, to make one's world fully manipulable. In civilisational settings, the left brain's predilection for grabbing and getting scales from individual habit to institutional structure. The allure of total power becomes, in city states and nation states, structurally impossible to resist.
Money — power's most loyal partner, its truest civilisational expression. What makes money uniquely dangerous is a double function no other measure has: it is both measure and store of value. Grams don't store weight. Miles per hour don't store speed. Money stores what it measures — or claims to. This impossible ambition (value cannot be stored, only nurtured) turns a useful tool into a totalising one. Money slowly and inexorably focuses the left brain's habits into an ivory castle of echo-chamber institutions that guard and compound what it calls wealth. Addiction is not metaphor; brain research confirms it as a left-hemisphere phenomenon.
Value — the pivot. This is the hinge between the two trinities.
Value is irreducibly subjective — it lies in the eye of the beholder, requires a conscious observer, cannot be made objective by abstracting it into price. This is why money's control of value perception is never total. The left can colonise the measure of value but not value itself, which keeps pointing back toward beauty, toward wisdom, toward what the right hemisphere knows.
Because value is the conceptual territory where the two hemispheres could actually speak to each other, it is also the most fought-over ground. Change the definition of value deeply enough, and all the wealth built on that definition disappears. This is why controlling value perception is always the key battleground — and why the six essays address it directly (see On Value, On Money).
The loop:
Money controls value perception → value perceived through the lens of price → price-based value justifies accumulation of money → accumulation of money buys more power → power controls the definition of money → back to the beginning.
Breaking the loop requires making value visible outside money's frame — which is what wisdom does, and what love does, and what health does. Whence the other trinity.

The Dark Triad at the Summit
The loop does not merely produce structural imbalance. It breeds a specific kind of human being at its apex.
The power that accumulates to the summit of civilisation — the kind that creates and sustains the summit — is so intense, so requiring of ruthlessness and insulation from correction, that it systematically selects for dark-triad personalities: narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism. Not because those individuals are uniquely evil, but because the summit's conditions favour them. Only dark-triad types can handle (in reality: be undeterred by, thrive within) the intensity of power at that level. Others flinch; they do not.
This is why Toby uses the word satanic — not in its religious sense, but as the name for a process: the perversion that must follow in the wake of corruption that dark-triad personalities bring about, cumulatively, across generations. Masculinity perverts to tyranny. Lovemaking perverts to porn. Eros perverts to lust. Care perverts to surveillance. Every sacred thing, bent.
The left brain cannot admit this error and correct course. It doubles down. The accumulation of power makes correction existentially threatening to those who hold it.
This is the Mexican Standoff: the left brain in possession of civilisational power, weapons of mass destruction now in the gift of states, and no internal mechanism of correction available. The loop cannot break itself from within.
This is why love↔wisdom↔health is not a pleasant alternative but a structural necessity. The only interruption of the loop that does not require the loop's own machinery to work.

What Power Wants

The structural explanation for corruption: power wants zero unwanted consequences.
Total control, total predictability, all friction eliminated. Every surprise is a threat; every refusal is a failure of the system. The dark-triad summit described above is not merely ruthless — it is constitutively oriented toward the elimination of life's generative texture. Unwanted consequences are not problems to solve; they are what life is. The generative friction, the note that wasn't planned, the other who says no — these are what make the music possible.
This is why you cannot cage a living being. A living being constitutively generates unwanted consequences. Its sovereignty — its capacity to say no — is not incidental but constitutive. Remove it and what remains is no longer a being in any meaningful sense. Remove it at civilisational scale and what remains is not society but machinery.
